The Europeana Libraries project is working to make 5 million digital objects from 19 leading European research libraries freely accessible on The European Library and Europeana websites.

Spanish civil war photographs, Ottoman manuscripts, historic medical films and thousands of theses, journals and academic articles are among the digital resources that Europeana Libraries is working with. When the Project finishes at the end of 2012, it will have created:

  • A valuable resource for scholars, with full-text search capabilities for written works
  • A robust network of national, university and research libraries
  • An efficient aggregation model that can be used by research libraries across Europe

These 4 organisations form the bedrock of the Europeana Libraries project.

  • Europeana Foundation
  • CENL
  • CERL
  • LIBER

The European Library uses first data from ENUMERATE

The European Library is pleased to announce that we were able to use the first set of data made available by the ENUMERATE project (www.enumerate.eu). The data provided by ENUMERATE helped The European Library identify digitised collections across Europe which will be essential for the newly-developed content strategy. This effort clearly supports the strategic aims of the national libraries of Europe, represented in The European Library.

ENUMERATE is a 3-year, EC-funded project designed to create a reliable baseline of statistical data about digitisation, digital preservation and online access to cultural heritage in Europe. In the past, statistical data on Europe’s digital heritage has been tentative and scattered. Through ENUMERATE, led by Collections Trust in the UK, major improvements are now being made in the quality and availability of intelligence about digital heritage.
